Tell them it sucked! It's your birthday, and they should know you well enough to know what you like!
Thank them for their thoughtful efforts, and drop hints close to your birthday NEXT year of your ideal birthday celebration would be.
Keep it to yourself! After all, it IS the thought that counts, and you're lucky to have someone who cares enough to make an effort.
