How do you keep your kids busy (and household sane) in the hour leading up to dinner?

I have them help making dinner and setting the table
The kids use that time to do homework
That's when they are allowed to go on the computer, which keeps them engaged
That's reading time or some other quiet, recreational activity
I send them outdoors if the weather is okay
Good question: we're still figuring it out
I let them do what they want - hey, it's been a long day for them, too.
