He should man up and fly down with the rest of the gang
Take a Xanax and sleep the whole flight down
Give in to his fear of flying; grab some Hendrix tunes, a pack of Marlboros & a case of RedBull and drive 21 hours
Pretend he's going and then make up an excuse a few days prior and bail on the trip
Blame work and say he cant take any time off and not deal with it
