A) In the MA EDST degree, SCPE concentration, and the MEd SCPE degree, you will take a mix of courses that examine schooling and other forms of education from many perspectives. The traditional academic disciplines of history, philosophy, and sociology are three of those perspectives. Another perspective is offered by cultural studies in education, or the study of how meaning is made in and through education. This degree concentration and degree further offer you the possibility of studying education as it relates to one or more of the following areas in which the department’s faculty also offer courses: Indigenous education, policy, international education, children’s and youth issues, social justice, and the study of identity – e.g. gender, race, disability. ... If you are interested in pursuing independent research, and in completing a thesis in one or more areas of study that SCPE offers you should apply for the MA in EDST degree, SCPE concentration. If instead your interest lies in course work and the application of scholarship to another field or pursuit, such as schoolteaching or community work or policy development, you should apply for the M.Ed. degree in SCPE, where students complete a capstone course or graduating paper in lieu of a thesis. The MA concentration and M.Ed. degrees share common core courses. Both programs consist of 30 credits. Students in the MA degree receive credit for thesis work. Students in the M.Ed. degree do a greater number of electives.

B) We seek graduate students with a genuine interest in educational politics and theories and practices associated with the arts, social science and humanities. A primary focus for our program is to assist students in learning to critically assess the relationship between such politics and theories and the potential for the development of more socially just societies. Students should therefore be able to demonstrate academic strength, preferably in one or more of the disciplinary or interdisciplinary areas in the humanities and social sciences that inform the SCPE programs (history, sociology, philosophy, cultural studies, women’s and gender studies, environmental studies, human geography, political science, etc.).Experience Requirements:What is required is evidence of experience in the field of education, which is quite broadly conceived.We define education very broadly to include formal school contexts, as well as non-formal education and informal learning at all levels and life stages.
