In a Facebook poll of 4,137 respondents, 13.2% chose “İstanbul”. How we count

Share: ···

İstanbul topped a field of 77 Turkish cities with 547 votes — just 13.2% of 4,137 cast. Ankara, in second, drew 6.9%, less than half that share. More than 70 cities never cracked 2%, and the bottom dozen combined for barely 100 votes. This wasn't a mandate; it was a plurality squeezed out of a badly splintered field.

The race actually settled fast: Tokat opened with a brief 25% burst on day 1, but İstanbul overtook it by day 2 and the gap held near 13-14 points for the next 46 days without budging. Yet among voters tagged by country, Türkiye's own cohort leaned toward Antalya, not the winner — the loudest home crowd didn't back the frontrunner.

  • Fragmented field · 77 cities competed; İstanbul won with only 13.2% of votes
  • Settled by day 2 · Lead flipped early, then held steady for 46 straight days
  • Home crowd disagreed · Türkiye's tagged voters leaned Antalya, not winner İstanbul
  • Gender split · Ankara's backers ran 100% male vs. İstanbul's 71%
