Strip the poll to its biggest single bloc and the national headline flips: Egypt cast more votes than any other country, and most of them went to Ahmed Zewail — not to Amr Moussa, the man who led from day one and finished at 34%. Moussa's win was built somewhere else entirely.
The split runs by geography, not just Egypt. Saudi Arabia and Jordan also lean Zewail. But the U.S., UAE, Qatar and Kuwait all lean Moussa, and with 95 votes the U.S. alone nearly matches Egypt's Zewail bloc. Over 3,626 votes and 54 days, Moussa's national lead never moved — it just wasn't Egypt supplying it.
- Egypt's verdict · Egypt, the largest voting bloc, favored Zewail over the eventual winner
- Diaspora offset · 95 U.S. votes leaned Moussa, nearly matching Egypt's Zewail tilt
- Regional split · Saudi Arabia and Jordan sided with Zewail; UAE, Qatar, Kuwait with Moussa
- Steady margin · Moussa's lead held at roughly a third of the vote all 54 days
