Then, with just 16 days left, أحمد شفيق snatched it away, lost it back a day later, and grabbed it for good on day 164. From there he never gave it up again.

The final tally: 899 votes to 891 — an 8-vote margin, 0.2 points, out of over 3,000 cast. Neither man cracked a third of the field; five other names split the rest, so the winner governs a plurality, not a mandate. The two frontrunners also drew starkly different crowds: أبو أسماعيل's support ran 82% male, شفيق's closer to two-thirds.
