My Austrian friends are curious why Americans drink out of straws in restaurants. What's your theory?

Sometimes glasses may not be as clean as you'd like

You want to bend directly over the glass and not touch it because your hands are dirty from picking up your food

You are so used to drinking from fast food cups with straws that you've evolved past needing to drink from the glass
