How should Emily spend her time: learning French, relearning Mandarin (which she does not remember any of in spite of 2 years of study), or focusing on a language she already knows how to speak (Spanish or Cantonese)?

1) Mandarin (1,100 million speakers) - more people speak Mandarin than any other language in the world; could be useful for a trip to China

2) French (72 million speakers) - it's pretty, lots of theory is in French, and it could be useful for a trip to Europe; plus knowing French will make Emily feel less ignorant and uncultured ;-P

3) Spanish (332 million speakers) - Emily ya habla un poco de español y debe mejorarlo! Hay mucha gente en los estados unidos que hablan español y Emily puede usar español en la organizacion politica.

4) Cantonese (66 million speakers) - Emily is illiterate in the first language she ever learned and speaks it like a little kid. She has difficulty discussing anything of substance with her own parents and will be embarrassed when she finally visits Hong Kong.
