No drama here — Messi grabbed a 31% lead on day one and never let go, cruising to 21.6% of 5,356 votes. The real fight was for second: Torres held that spot from day 3 through day 74, only for Villa to overtake him in the final stretch and lock in 11.6% to Torres's 9.7%.
The gender split is the real story: Messi's coalition ran 101 men to just 12 women, and Roone… and Villa mirrored that pattern almost exactly. Only Jozy Altidore drew a female-only vote. Geography flipped the script, though — U.S. voters (66 votes) leaned Torres, not Messi, while Malaysia and Serbia backed Messi hardest.
- Wire-to-wire leader · Messi led all 97 days, never challenged for first
- Late overtake · Villa passed Torres for 2nd place after day 75
- Lopsided gender split · Messi voters ran 101 men to 12 women
- U.S. bucked the trend · Top country (66 votes) leaned Torres over Messi
