No one came close to a majority: the winning charity founder, Nicoleta Lontos, topped a ten-way field with just 21.9% of 2,476 votes, four points ahead of runner-up Antim Benchiş, the policeman who pulled two people from a fire. The real story is who showed up for each of them.
Lontos's support was three-quarters female — 396 women to 134 men. Benchiş's was the mirror image, pulling 55% male voters. The lead bounced between the two on day 2 and again on day 4 before Lontos's crowd carried her to a stable margin through the final three days, in a race where eight other names split the rest almost evenly.
