Hemangi Gupta held the top spot through the middle of the poll, only to watch Shwetha Verma overtake her by 19 points on day 4 — a swing big enough to look decisive. It wasn't. On day 5, the final day, Hemangi surged back and closed it out 23.2% to 21.8%: 602 votes to 565, a 37-vote gap in a field of 2,590.

That final margin barely covers Hemangi's win, and geography explains why it was so tight. Indonesia cast the single largest bloc of votes, 794, and it leaned toward Shwetha the whole way. Hemangi's path to the top ran through Canada and India instead — enough to outlast the country that voted the most.
