Howick College grabbed a 67% opening blowout, only to lose it a day later to Ngaruawahia. From there the race turned into a relay: Marlborough Boys' College took over by day 3, Mercury Bay seized it on day 5 and held nearly a week, and Howick clawed back the top spot on day 8.
The finish was pure nerves — Mercury Bay retook the lead on day 12 before Howick snatched it right back on the final day, closing at 35.5% to 34.9%, just 36 votes apart. Marlborough held on for a clear third at 14.4%, while the other 11 schools split the remaining scraps under 12% combined.
