Look at the country breakdown and Maui's win looks wrong: the United States, the poll's largest single country bloc, leaned Big Island of Hawai'i. So did Canada. The U.K. and Peru sided with Kauai. Australia went O'ahu. Not one top country favored Maui — yet it took the poll outright, 799 votes to O'ahu's 680, 30.8% to 26.2%.

The gap is who actually shows up versus who gets tracked by country. Maui's coalition ran nearly 82% female — the most lopsided gender split of any option, ahead of O'ahu's 73% and Big Island's 60%. The internationally-flagged voters scattered toward Big Island and Kauai; the broader, women-heavy turnout is what put Maui over the top.

  • Zero-for-five countries · Not one top country's leaning bloc backed Maui, the eventual winner.
  • Most female split · Maui's voters ran 82% female, the most lopsided split in the field.
  • Largest bloc dissented · The 10-vote U.S. bloc, the biggest of any country, leaned Big Island instead.
