In a Facebook poll of 3,103 respondents, 21.4% chose “South Dakota”. How we count
Share: ···
The top spot changed hands three times. Illinois opened with a 13-point edge, Wisconsin grabbed it by day 2, California pushed ahead by day 4 with the widest cushion of the race, and South Dakota didn't take over until day 7 — then held it for the remaining 16 days.
Even after all that shuffling, South Dakota's finish is a plurality, not a mandate: 665 votes out of 3,103, just 21.4%, with California 6.9 points back and 49 other states splitting the rest. On a 51-option ballot, nobody was ever close to a majority.
- Three lead changes · Illinois, Wisconsin, California and South Dakota each held the top spot.
- A plurality, not a mandate · Winner took 21.4% of the vote across 51 states on the ballot.
- Wisconsin's lopsided crowd · 81% of Wisconsin's voters were men, the most skewed of any leader.
