Brazil and Italy tied dead even at 546 votes apiece, and England sat just six votes behind them at 540. A single-day surge on day 4 briefly put England on top before Spain reclaimed the lead by day 5 and held that edge for the poll's remaining 13 days — but 'held the edge' understates how crowded second place stayed the whole way.
