AKB48 dominated from the opening day, leading by roughly 24-28% for over ten weeks straight while One Direction sat quietly in second. Then, deep into the poll's final stretch, the whole race flipped on day 77 — One Direction surged past AKB48 and never looked back, closing 24% to 21%.

The gender split explains everything: One Direction pulled 1,511 women against just 155 men, a near 10-to-1 landslide, while AKB48 actually skewed male (695M/559F). Thailand cast 3,706 of the 7,153 votes and leaned One Direction, while Japan's own 16 votes stayed loyal to AKB48 — a hometown holdout against the global tide.

• Day 77 flip · One Direction overtook AKB48 after 76 days trailing
